Boundary, Authority, Role and Task: BART Analysis Applied
By Dan Mezick

When groups of people have trouble executing tasks, the root cause is often related to definitions of Role, Task, Authority, and associated Boundaries (BART).

When definitions are clear, there is little ambiguity. When definitions are clear, there is potentially no waste generated from the need to discover these definitions and related Boundaries. Well defined ‘BART’ – a tool for discovering solvable problems related to Role, Authority, Task and Boundary - is required to reach the hyper-productive state at the group (“system”) level.

This talk introduces BART and BART analysis to enable understanding groups, social systems and the impact of ground rules on teams.

Dan Mezick

Dan Mezick is President of New Technology Solutions, a firm providing consulting on organizational learning to development teams, line managers and CxO level executives in the Northeast. His articles on group-level cognition and social systems have appeared in Agile Journal and InfoQ. Dan organized the Manifesting Agility track for Agile2009, a conference track focused on teams, teams cohesion and group-level cognition.
